Like many things, it might be worthwhile to brush up before the season starts. Many states require a safe boating course, but none that I know of require a periodic refresher course. It’s always interesting to me to see what you’ve forgotten…

In our home state of California, even though a course is not required, the CA Department of Boating and Waterways offers a free home study guide, called “California Boating” that can be ordered at their website, http://www.dbw.ca.gov or do,wnloaded at this link: http://www.dbw.ca.gov/PDF/DBWBoatCourse.pdf Addit.ionally, there are some free internet courses, such as the BoatU.S. Online Boating Safety Course.

And don’t forget - you can get insurance discounts for completing a safe boating class, so it might be worth it, just for the insurance savings.
