This is a sad story, but it’s worth noting a few things:

- Apparently everyone was wearing a life jacket
- The only survivor found so far was sitting ON TOP of the overturned hull. Water temps are in the high 60s, life expectancy in the water is something around 18 hours.
- No radio messages or calls for help were heard, which implies it happened quickly
- They were anchored 50 miles offshore in 15’ seas.
- From what I can tell, they had no EPIRB.

My guess would be that they were anchored to go fishing, or had engine problems and dropped the anchor while they worked on it. Building seas, plus having the anchor down (probably with not enough scope) probably allowed a wave to roll over the bow, swamping the boat, and causing it to flip. With the boat flipped, there was no radio; with no EPIRB, there was no way to call for help. They hung on for as long as they could, eventually became hypothermic, and let go. The lone survivor probably was the only guy able to get on top of the hull rocking in the waves…

Hello all, Glad to see this site back up and running.

I guess introductions are in order. I have fished Southern Cal my whole life in one form or another.
Long ago I was even a deckhand on a really well known sportboat. Not for a living thankgoodness but
to learn and improve my seamanship and fishing knowledge skills. Their is no better teacher then
being on the water with knowledgeable professionals and characters.

Now many lives over (seems like it). I have gone from a leaky 14 foot Valco with 9 horse Merc running
on one cylinder. Fishing the breakwall at night. To a Tracker sweet 16 fishing the Horseshoe. To a 17’
Baja Bayrunner fishing up and down the coast. To a 19’ Baja Bayrunner trailered everywhere the bite
was going….............. still have her in pristine condition in a garage when gas gets way out of line she
will taste the salt once more.

As I got older and being tired of being wet from salt spray I graduated to my pride and joy…........

A Pacificskiff 2325 WA. As you can see I love the Aluminum Alloy Skiffs.

Enough of the Intro Lets get to the fishing.

Just a thought…

Like many things, it might be worthwhile to brush up before the season starts. Many states require a safe boating course, but none that I know of require a periodic refresher course. It’s always interesting to me to see what you’ve forgotten…

In our home state of California, even though a course is not required, the CA Department of Boating and Waterways offers a free home study guide, called “California Boating” that can be ordered at their website, http://www.dbw.ca.gov or do,wnloaded at this link: http://www.dbw.ca.gov/PDF/DBWBoatCourse.pdf Addit.ionally, there are some free internet courses, such as the BoatU.S. Online Boating Safety Course.

And don’t forget - you can get insurance discounts for completing a safe boating class, so it might be worth it, just for the insurance savings.
