| Western Salt Water Fly Fishing | Dan Blanton's Bulletin Board | Dan is a well-known outdoor writer, and a recent inductee into the Fly Fishing Hall of Fame. Very, very experienced crew of posters, including several world record holders, with occasional appearances from "Right Coast" people like Lefty Kreh, Bob Popovics, and Bob Clouser. Dan manages the threads with an iron hand, and insists on civil behavior. |
| Billfishing | Southern California Marlin Online | Bart Miller, Peter Pakula, Fred Archer put in regular appearances. Need I say more? |

| Small Boat, General Fishing Offshore | Peter Pakula's Scrapbook | Peter Pakula is a well know offshore fisherman, and made his early mark fishing for big game from small boats. His personal website has a bunch of great articles that OSJ readers will enjoy. Just look in the section titled "Full List of All Pakula Articles" |
| Billfishing | Southern California Marlin Online | See above comments |

| General Power Boating | Powerboat-reports.com | A subscription-based web site. In-depth boat and product reviews, technically very astute. Worth the money! |
| DocksideReports.com | David Pascoe has some excellent information on boating, boat construction, etc. | |
| Boat Reviews | BoatTest.com | The best thing about this site are the boat test videos. They also have tables of test results, like fuel consumption and other performance items. |
| Boating Industry | Boating Industry International | A free site that has a lot of industry-related stories. Includes yachting and PWC stuff, too, so this may not be a site for you. |
| Survival Gear | Equipped To Survive | An independent organization which tests survival gear like EPIRBS, survival knives, etc. Very useful. |
| Ropes & Knots | New England Ropes | New England Ropes is one of the market leaders. This is a great site for not only product info, but also instructions on knots and splices. A little hard to navigate for certain things, click HERE to access the rope splicing page. |
| Charts | US NOAA Raster Navigation Chart Page | Up-to-date official raster chart files that can be viewed and printed on your computer. |

We read a lot of periodicals and books while working on OSJ. Most of them are readily available on the newstand or in bookstores, but here are some that may be a little hard to find that you'll find useful, along with a couple of classics. An Australian magazine available in the U.S.The publisher makes it to the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach every year. Outstanding production quality, many useful articles. Many of their contributors are small boat fishermen. |
A magazine for advanced fishermen. Many contributors are active sportfishing boat captains. Good technical articles on tackle and boating. |

Sport Fishing's editorial guides say "no stories about jetty or surf fishing. Our readers fish from boats". They also say that their philosophy is that readers should come away from every issue saying "Wow, I didn't know that!" My kind of magazine... |
A great magazine that is primarily focused on billfish, but also has some coverage of other types of fishing. Also more of a big-boat magazine, but still a good read. A sister publication to Sport Fishing |

|
Another sister magazine to Sport Fishing, they share the same philosophy of presenting new and interesting info in every issue. |
An magazine/newletter focused on unbiased reviews and tests of boating items. Excellent source of information. One of our favorites! |

"Chapman Piloting, Seamanship & Boat Handling " by Elbert S. Maloney (Hearst Marine Books) A classic, this boat should be in every boater's library |
"Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder (McGraw-Hill) Outstanding all-around boat maintenance book. Covers the wheres, whys and hows in detail. If you're going to be doing work on your boat, this is an excellent reference |

| Sorry! Believe it or not, Amazon.com does not carry this book. |
"Fishing for Billfish and Tuna" by Captain Peter Barrett (Fisherman's Press) A good basic primer for billfish and tuna. East Coast flavor, but the basics are the same |
Sorry! Believe it or not, Amazon.com does not carry this book. |
"In the Gray" by Captain Mark Wisch (Pacific Edge Press) A sequel to "Between 2 and 20 Fathoms", this book focuses on Catalina Island and it's great fishery for White Seabass, Yellowtail, Halibut and Calico Bass. While this is a great book on Southern California inshore fishing techniques, we feel that and even more important aspect of this book is the coverage it gives to other important ideas and concepts, such as the impacts of weather, moon phase, tide and coastal currents, and how they inter-relate (or not). Highly recommended. |

"Between 2 and 20 Fathoms" by Captain Mark Wisch (Pacific Edge Press) A great book on Southern California inshore fishing techniques. The book covers a lot of critical issues from a small boater's perspective, such as anchoring and positioning the boat. |

| On-line Shopping | Web Site | Comments |
| Fishing tackle | Offshore Angler (AKA Bass Pro Shops) | If you can find what you want, great pricing, usually excellent inventory. Excellent customer service. Will match pricing with Cabela's. |
| Bob Marriott's Fly Fishing | You won't find many bargains at fly fishing stores, and Marriott's is no exception. But they have excellent selection and service, and the staff are experts. | |
| Melton International Tackle | Offshore tuna & billfish specialists. Reasonable pricing, knowledgeable staff | |
| Boating | West Marine | Everyone who owns a boat should have their print catalog. Extensive list of products, lots of great articles. Their web site mirrors the print catalog, but can be a bit hard to locate items. Pricing may seem high, but they will match advertised pricing from competitors. Just don't expect them to offer to do it. |
| Bass Pro Shops Marine Catalog | See comments on Offshore Anglers. The focus is mostly on inshore/East Coast. | |
| Overton's | Excellent
selection and pricing on electronics, a reputation for knowledgeable staff, good pricing. Need
a Simrad sonar? Find it here. Overton's is their general boating and watersports division. Similar to West Marine in terms of product selection |
|
| D&B Marine Electronics & Supplies | The site's not pretty, but the pricing is. Consistently some of the lowest prices around. | |
| Books | Amazon.com | No comment needed, I hope! |
