We read a lot of periodicals and books while working on OSJ. Most of them are readily available on the newstand or in bookstores, but here are some that may be a little hard to find that you'll find useful, along with a couple of classics. Bluewater Boats and Fishing

An Australian magazine available in the U.S.The publisher makes it to the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach every year. Outstanding production quality, many useful articles. Many of their contributors are small boat fishermen.

Big Game Fishing Journal

A magazine for advanced fishermen. Many contributors are active sportfishing boat captains. Good technical articles on tackle and boating.

Sport Fishing

Sport Fishing's editorial guides say "no stories about jetty or surf fishing. Our readers fish from boats". They also say that their philosophy is that readers should come away from every issue saying "Wow, I didn't know that!" My kind of magazine...

Marlin

A great magazine that is primarily focused on billfish, but also has some coverage of other types of fishing. Also more of a big-boat magazine, but still a good read. A sister publication to Sport Fishing

Fly Fishing in Salt Waters

Another sister magazine to Sport Fishing, they share the same philosophy of presenting new and interesting info in every issue.

Powerboat Reports

An magazine/newletter focused on unbiased reviews and tests of boating items. Excellent source of information. One of our favorites!

"Chapman Piloting,  Seamanship & Boat Handling " by Elbert S. Maloney (Hearst Marine Books)

A classic, this boat should be in every boater's library

"Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder (McGraw-Hill)

Outstanding all-around boat maintenance book. Covers the wheres, whys and hows in detail. If you're going to be doing work on your boat, this is an excellent reference

Sorry! Believe it or not, Amazon.com does not carry this book.

"Fishing for Billfish and Tuna" by Captain Peter Barrett (Fisherman's Press)

A good basic primer for billfish and tuna. East Coast flavor, but the basics are the same

Sorry! Believe it or not, Amazon.com does not carry this book.

"In the Gray" by Captain Mark Wisch (Pacific Edge Press)

A sequel to "Between 2 and 20 Fathoms", this book focuses on Catalina Island and it's great fishery for White Seabass, Yellowtail, Halibut and Calico Bass. While this is a great book on Southern California inshore fishing techniques, we feel that and even more important aspect of this book is the coverage it gives to other important ideas and concepts, such as the impacts of weather, moon phase, tide and coastal currents, and how they inter-relate (or not). Highly recommended.

"Between 2 and 20 Fathoms" by Captain Mark Wisch (Pacific Edge Press)

A great book on Southern California inshore fishing techniques. The book covers a lot of critical issues from a small boater's perspective, such as anchoring and positioning the boat.

On-line Shopping Web Site Comments
Fishing tackle Offshore Angler (AKA Bass Pro Shops) If you can find what you want, great pricing, usually excellent inventory. Excellent customer service. Will match pricing with Cabela's.
Bob Marriott's Fly Fishing You won't find many bargains at fly fishing stores, and Marriott's is no exception. But they have excellent selection and service, and the staff are experts.
Melton International Tackle Offshore tuna & billfish specialists. Reasonable pricing, knowledgeable staff
Boating West Marine Everyone who owns a boat should have their print catalog. Extensive list of products, lots of great articles. Their web site mirrors the print catalog, but can be a bit hard to locate items. Pricing may seem high, but they will match advertised pricing from competitors. Just don't expect them to offer to do it.
Bass Pro Shops Marine Catalog See comments on Offshore Anglers. The focus is mostly on inshore/East Coast.
Overton's Excellent selection and pricing on electronics, a reputation for knowledgeable staff, good pricing. Need a Simrad sonar? Find it here.

Overton's is their general boating and watersports division. Similar to West Marine in terms of product selection
D&B Marine Electronics & Supplies The site's not pretty, but the pricing is. Consistently some of the lowest prices around.
Books Amazon.com No comment needed, I hope!
