What's Up with E-TEC?

After a number of months of reviewing Internet threads, infomercials, and magazine articles, and folding in our own experiences with Evinrude's E-TEC technology, we take a stab at presenting a balanced view of the product, and make some recommendations to potential buyers.

Background | Infomercial | PR&Press | Performance | Service/Reliability | Summary

Ah..the Internet, where opinion and fact become indistinguishable, and every event becomes a sign of the Apocalypse...

With Spring approaching, posts requesting feedback on Evinrude's E-TEC motors, and asking for comparisons to 4-strokes and other 2-strokes, are appearing more frequently.

Depending on the venue where the post appears, these discussion threads usually degenerate into back-and-forth blasts and personal attacks, complicated he-said-she-said accounts of problems (which are either immediately dismissed or become signs of major design flaws), accusations of fraud and conspiracy, and condemnations of various national groups.

As one frustrated person wrote: "What is the average consumer supposed to do?"

Since you're here - start by reading this article. In the following 5 sections, we try to

present a balanced view of E-TEC motors, their good and bad points, what's really behind the infomercial, what the prevailing winds are on service and reliability, and some unbiased recommendations for new boat / engine buyers

We've spent a lot of time talking to people, trading information, reading articles and web threads, and sifting through this information. We're engineers and business people by training, and we've tried to apply common sense and a sense of fair play to everything we've collected. We think we've made a pretty decent stab at it.

So read on, and see what you think. Don't like what you've read? Disagree with the analysis? Send us an e-mail, or post something on our discussion forum. Oh yeah...if you like what you've read, post that too!

And don't forget, it's: "E-TEC", not:
"ETEC", "E-TECH", "ETECH" or "ETEK".
