The Tao of Rigging (Part 2)
In our last issue, we covered what went into rigging Toy Boat 2 prior to
launch. Now we'll fast-forward four years, and discuss where we are now
and how we got there...

We are Now | For the Future
There are a lot of potential items to add to TB2. For example:
-
Folding arch or T-top - In order to use radar, it
will be necessary to get the radome well overhead. This means an arch or T-top,
but the arch or T-top will have to fold down to fit in the garage.
We should be able to combine it with the luggage rack. The arch/T-top
will also be a good place to store a life raft, and will elevate the radio
antenna another 6 feet, increasing range even more.
-
Foghorn sequencer - Do you remember the horn signals for
operating a vessel in heavy fog? Or, more importantly, will you remember
to execute them correctly while trying to run the
boat? There is at least one signal sequencer on the market which will
automatically sound your horn as required by the regulations.
-
Radar - Everyone says "don't leave the harbor without it at
night or in fog". How will we select and install one on TB2?
-
LED nav lights, trailer lights - LED lights have a lot of
advantages, despite higher initial cost. They will probably be a good addition
to TB2.
-
Trim tab position indicator - A simple (if pricey) item
to add, it adds a certtain level of convenience to using trim tabs. Right now,
if we are unsure where the tabs are positioned, we drive them to the full UP
position by running them for 7 seconds, then lower them from there.
-
Satellite phone - One of the last unknowns for us in high-seas
communications, the satellite phone looks to be a big safety plus.
-
Nexmar SS star adjusters and internal sprayers - Our
Fulton electric drum brakes are suffering from some internal corrosion issues,
not unusual for drum brakes in salt water. The SS star adjusters sold by Nexmar
Products look like a great item to replace the factory adjusters, which have
corroded and are hard to adjust. And their brake flushing nozzle is a work of
art - it should help wash down the brake internally much better than the simple
spigot in the Fulton flush kit.
-
Rod tubes - Our horizontal rod racks work well, but still
leave the rods vulnerable to being broken by someone falling aginst them. We
will probably be adding some PVC tubes to protect the rods.
-
Life raft - Do we need one? Maybe...Maybe not. Until we get
the arch/T-top, however, there's no place to put it anyway.
Plus, lots more stuff...
