Sonar Reflections

A good sonar unit may not be essential when fishing offshore, but it sure helps! This article covers some of the more subtle points on sonar selection and use that we encountered while setting up Toy Boat 2...

Background  |  Comparison  |  Install&Setup  |  User Interface |  Performance  |  What's Next?

So...a bunch of interesting things learned,  most of which still seem to apply to today's sonars. Lately, Lowrance has made a very serious push into ocean-oriented electronics. They arguably have some of the best color display technology, hopefully their user interface and automatic operation capabilities have improved from the X-85 days.

What's next? We've actually already moved on to the next phase, which was to move on to a color sonar unit. To that end, we decided to replace the LS-6100 (good as it was) with a "next gen" color unit: the Raymarine DS600X . Again, a very similar unit in terms of physical size and output, but now a "digital" sonar (whatever that means!), with a color display.

We'll be posting some followup reports on the DS600X in the coming months.
