We read a lot of periodicals and books while working on OSJ. Most of them are readily available on the newstand or in bookstores, but here are some that may be a little hard to find that you'll find useful, along with a couple of classics. Do you have some you'd like to add to the list? E-mail the editor and submit your choices

Magazines
Focus Publication Comments
Offshore fishing & boating Bluewater Boats and Fishing An Australian magazine available in the U.S.The publisher makes it to the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach every year. Outstanding production quality, many useful articles. Many of their contributors are small boat fishermen.
Big Game Fishing Journal A magazine for advanced fishermen. Many contributors are active sportfishing boat captains. Good technical articles on tackle and boating.
Sportfishing Boats A Poole Publication (see also Trailer Boats Magazine and Bass and Walleye Boats Magazine). Now defunct, but mentioned here as a memorial for a good magazine. Maybe a little basic sometimes, and too many big-boat articles for my tastes, but had the right idea.
Boating Product Reviews Powerboat Reports An magazine/newletter focused on unbiased reviews and tests of boating items. Excellent source of information.

Books
Focus Title/ Author/ Publisher Comments
Offshore fishing & boating "Fishing for Billfish and Tuna" by Captain Peter Barrett
(Fisherman's Press)
A good basic primer for billfish and tuna. East Coast flavor, but the basics are the same
Inshore Fishing "Between 2 and 20 Fathoms" by Captain Mark Wisch (Pacific Edge Press) A great book on Southern California inshore fishing techniques. The book covers a lot of critical issues from a small boater's perspective, such as anchoring and positioning the boat.
Boating "Chapman Piloting,  Seamanship & Boat Handling " by Elbert S. Maloney (Hearst Marine Books) A classic, this boat should be in every boater's library
"Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder (McGraw-Hill) Outstanding all-around boat maintenance book. Covers the wheres, whys and hows in detail. If you're going to be doing work on your boat, this is an excellent reference
